The twins grew up in a smallish town. Their parents fought a lot. South reacted to this by being antagonistic in return. North reacted by trying to be the nicest person ever, hoping that his good behavior would be rewarded. Sometimes when things got really bad, North and South would get shipped out to their grandmother’s house in the countryside where there were lots of wheat fields. That was the one time that they could really spend time together peacefully, just…being themselves, without the pressure of their parents or kids at school.

The day their parents got divorced was the day that they joined the army. The two of them had a sort of lifelong unspoken promise to stay together, whatever happened, however much they fought.
